K-5th GRADE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

OCEANS ALIVE!

Children will study living and nonliving products from the sea with many opportunities to touch live marine organisms. In addition to being a fun exploration of our ocean critters, it is also an opportunity to put their sorting skills to good use by classifying nonliving versus living things and plants versus animals.

ADAPTATIONS STATIONS!

Students will explore live marine animals and all their amazing adaptations. Students will practice their writing skills as they document and describe the features that help animals catch food, protect themselves from predators, find mates, and hold on in crashing waves,

WEB OF LIFE

This two-part activity will show students how all animals are connected to each other through a food web. Students will first construct their own food web and follow this activity with an exploration of food webs that exist in the ocean. Live marine plants and animals will be on hand for students to explore.

WATERSHED CONNECTION

Help your students understand the water cycle and water pollution issues through an exciting game and by studying maps of Los Angeles County. In addition to a workout and mapping skills, your students will develop an understanding of how water becomes polluted and what they can do minimize waste going into the ocean.

6th -12th GRADE EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

MICROEXPLORATIONS

We will bring live algae and plankton for your students to investigate under microscopes. If you don't have microscopes, don't worry, we'll bring those too! Students can explore the diversity of marine life and observe the differences that exist between the cells of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.

SEASHELL CLASSIFICATION

Need some great ideas for studying taxonomy and classification? - Try our seashells! Students will explore seashells from around the world and use them in constructing a dichotomous key. Students will learn how to classify animals and discover the characteristics that make shell-building mollusks so unique.

SPINELESS WONDERS

Do you want to explore the diversity of life through a lab practical that comes alive with animals? We can bring you an array of invertebrates and hands-on activities that show you how truly diverse the backboneless animal kingdom is.

FINTASTIC FISH

Do want to become a fish expert? It all starts with knowing how to tell your gill rakers from your peduncle! Our presentation will show you how a fish moves and how it is adapted to living in its ocean habitat. In addition, if you provide the T-shirts, we will provide the fish and paint for fish printing!

LIFE CYCLES OF THE SPINEY AND SCALEY

Interested in lab about fish and sea urchins REPRODUCING! This activity is guaranteed to get your students' attention! We are happy to provide you with live and preserved samples of fish and urchins at various stages in their development. Students will enhance their understanding of marine animal life cycles and how they differ from those of terrestrial animals.

GETTING INTO SQUID

How does a squid move, capture prey, or store its ink? Did you know squid have 3 hearts? These questions and many more are answered in a dissection of the fastest invertebrate in the world!! Through videos, simulations, and easy-to-follow dissection instructions, students will learn about this marvelously adapted sea creature.

WATER QUALITY TESTING

What does good water quality mean? We provide easy-to-use, water quality test kits so your students can get a hand-on experience in measuring characteristics that define good water quality. In addition to learning about chemicals hands-on, students will also practice precision, accuracy, repetition and other examples of proper lab technique.

PROPERTIES OF WATER

What factors affect water density? Our activities make learning about density fun and interactive. Students will get to directly experiment with changes in temperature and pressure using materials we provide! For those teachers that want to get REALLY immersed in water, we can also observe osmosis in action and how the ocean's topography can affect wave energy and direction.
