Statement of Student Success
SUBJECT: 6th Grade Math
TEACHER: Mr. Healy
BASIC OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
1. To communicate knowledge of mathematics through speaking and writing.
2. To increase student ability to work well with others.
3. To enhance individual growth in mathematics via cooperative (group) learning.
4. To learn and apply various strategies to solve problems.
5. To use multiple representations to describe and solve problems -- words, tables,
charts, graphs, pictures, and digital multimedia.
6. To advance arithmetic skills with whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals,
percents, and rational numbers.
7. To use technology such as calculators and computers for mathematical operations.
8. To recognize, describe, analyze, and generate a wide variety of patterns.
9. To use measurement as a descriptive and analytical tool.
10. To advance understanding of probability and statistics as they apply to the real
world.
11. To be able to solve simple algebraic equations.
12. To be able to identify geometric forms and possess a general knowledge of geometry.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
1. Bring all necessary materials to class: a 1 1/2" 3-ring binder with 5 dividers, ruled notebook paper, blue ballpoint pen, pencils,
and eraser.
2. Maintain all daily exercises, classwork & homework, problems of the week (POWs),
notes/key problems/definitions/journal entries, quizzes & tests, and paperback textbook
in the binder.
3. Complete and correct daily homework assignments (estimated to average approximately
30 minutes outside of class).
4. Take periodically scheduled quizzes and tests.
GRADING POLICY
1. ACADEMIC -- In addition to work stored in the binder, student assessment may include
groupwork, portfolios, and projects. A point system will be used to assign grades
as follows:
90 - 100% A
80 - 89% B
65 - 79% C
50 - 64% D
Below 50% F
2. CITIZENSHIP -- This grade is based on classroom behavior, number of detentions,
and teacher discretion.
3. WORK HABITS -- This grade is based on completion of classwork & homework and group
participation. Number of missed assignments and teacher discretion determine this
grade.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES
Please refer to separate handouts which were distributed and signed during the first
week of school .
TEACHER AVAILABILITY
I will be available on a regular daily basis. Hours and locations will be announced in
my classroom.
Parent conferences may be arranged by calling the main office. I will return your
call to set up a convenient meeting place and time.
