A Message from the PTSA President
The Two Roles of Parents: Child's First Educator and School Partner
As we have discussed on this page before, parents are the protectors, the nurturers, and the role models for their children. Being an adult is hard work - being a parent an even greater responsibility. The development of our children into the citizens we would like them to be requires constant vigilance - and teamwork with those institutions that help us in this endeavor. One of those institutions, of course, is the Culver City Middle School. We, as parents, share responsibility for our children's education; we must stay involved.
Involved parents:
- Send to school a child who is ready and eager to learn, self-disciplined and prepared to accept the authority of school staff. We must be sure our child understands and follows school rules.
- Supervise homework assignments as needed. If there is any question about an assignment, contact your child's teacher.
- Seek the advice of teachers to understand their children's growth and learning - and share information about their children that will help teachers instruct and counsel them.
- Learn about school programs (during and after school), curriculum, regulations, and procedures, and actively support them.
- Show commitment to education by attending parent-teacher conferences, open houses, PTSA meetings, student concerts, and other school programs whenever possible.
- Embrace volunteer opportunities in and out of the classroom (a blatant solicitation for participation in PTSA).
- Understand and work for the passage of school-funding initiatives and work against those initiatives that are harmful to public education.
- It would be a serious mistake to be passive in this enterprise. I encourage you to redouble your efforts to participate in your child's education.
