Group Rules
Rule 1: Each member of the group is responsible for listening carefully when another group member is talking.
Rule 2: Each member of the group has the responsibility and the right to ask questions.
Rule 3: Each member of the group has the responsibility to help others in the group when asked.
Rule 4: Each member of the group should be considerate and encouraging.
Rule 5: Work together until everyone in the group agrees with the group's decision or solution and can explain it. This is called building consensus.
Rule 6: Each group member contributes to the group's work. To achieve Rule 6, it is helpful for each group member to have a specific job.
Some Group Jobs (Roles)
Reader: Read and explain the questions or problems that the group will be working on. Make sure everyone understands all the words in a problem or the instructions.
Recorder: Write a summary of the group's decisions and ideas, and read them back to the group to ensure agreement and accuracy.
Quality Controller: Monitor the group's results and make sure that the group produces high quality work (in agreement with instructions).
Chairperson: Keep the group on track and make sure everyone is participating; communicate with teacher on task progress.
Facilitator: Similar to chairperson. Remain neutral on disagreements; make sure everyone's being fair; monitor progress.
Supplies Monitor: Make sure all required supplies are available to everyone in the group; get necessary supplies as instructed; alert teacher to needs.
Group (Collaborative) Learning
Group learning is:
- Sharing your thinking about problems
- Discussing different answers/solutions
- Asking each other questions
- Asking others to explain steps
- Pooling knowledge / Comparing answers
- Summarizing team response
- Teamwork
- Appreciating different members' abilities
- Listening to each other
- Staying on task
Group learning is NOT:
- Copying answers
- Letting someone else do the thinking
- Staying silent all the time
- Just using the calculator
- "Bagging on" someone
- Talking all the time
- Talking about social activities
